Dyson DC39 canister vacuum with Ball Technology

canister-vacuum-dyson-dc39-ball-vacuum.jpg

Engineered to follow faithfully, DC39 is Dyson first canister vacuum cleaner with Ball Technology for stable maneuvering around the tightest corners. Canister cleaners are often awkward to steer and can topple. They lurch into furniture, veer off at tangents and may be difficult to pull. Like an errant shopping cart, their crude casters drift across hard floors and get buried in carpets, so more force is needed to keep them on track. And reliant on bags, they can lose suction, too.

Sitting on a ball, DC39 has a lower center of gravity and is easier to pull without snagging on corners or the carpet pile. Coupled with a unique central steering system, the canister vacuum uses an articulating chassis and central pivot point for negotiating tight turns and circumnavigating sofas. And equipped with Dyson Radial Root Cyclone technology, it captures more microscopic dust than any other vacuum.

Other vacuum cleaners still rely on bags, losing suction over time. Dyson has been continually refining vacuum Radial Root Cyclone Technology since inventing it more than 20 years ago. Every angle of [...]

Bissell Swift Sweep Sweeper Keeps Your Kitchen Clean

51CCY8EEKKL._AA300_.jpg

We’ve been using a Bissell Sweeper for just about 4 years now because we can’t seem to let go of a little carpet in our kitchen and also there’s all those debris that need cleaning. It picks up just about anything a quarter inch or smaller, and is easy to put away by simply sticking it in the corner. Given you get dual dustbins inside the Bissell, you can use it for about 1/2 the week or so before emptying. It’s also great to use around the house for quick pickups and it can remove a kid made cheerio mess in about 5 seconds.

Siemens Z 5.0 compact vacuum – Extreme Power edition

siemens-z-5.0-vacuum.jpg

The new Siemens Z 5.0 is the premium compact vacuum cleaner capable of achieving a very impressive 47-liter per second suction rate. This compact powerhouse comes with the special Siemens motor that employs the latest super efficient XTRM compressor technology, providing the basis for such an incredible performance. With the Z 5.0 Extreme Power edition, you are getting a highly optimized air flow, making it an alternative to the larger Z 6.0 Extreme Power which creates 50-liter power per minute rate.

The old equation a lot of watts = more power is no longer valid in modern vacuum cleaners. What ultimately matters is the force that is actually applied to the carpet. The air flow is much more relevant as it indicates how much air is drawn per second. And more air per second means more dust and dirt gets vacuumed. The compact Siemens Z 5.0 Extreme Power has a 4.5 liter dust bag while its hose and intake manifold diameter is 20% larger than those of the regular vacuum cleaners. The result is lesser air resistance, turbulence and fewer bottlenecks that typically slow down the air flow.

The vacuum also comes [...]

Back-to-School Appliance-Buying Guide

Back-to-School Appliance-Buying Guide

Hard times don’t mean college students have to give up healthful, tasty food.

These appliances will come in handy whether your son or daughter lives in a dorm or an off-campus apartment.

And while this gear won’t turn your college-age cooks into an Iron Chef, they can save them some money and add variety and spice to their diet.

Be sure to check your school’s guidelines about appliances, and see the rest of our back-to-school coverage.

Compact Refrigerators

The “dorm-room refrigerator” moniker shows how closely compact refrigerators have become identified with college life, but only some of the models we tested made the grade. Many models have a single temperature-control dial, so you can’t find an ideal temperature between the refrigerator and freezer sections. And all that we tested for this report are comparative energy hogs.

Only two refrigerators we tested had freezer sections that were able to keep frozen confections from turning to mush, and the 3.7-cubic-foot Avanti 308YWT, 0, flunked basic refrigeration. Choose the 4.6-cubic-foot Frigidaire FRC05L5D, 0, if your student will be a frequent frozen-food diner. Tell your kid to discard frozen foods that have [...]

Kitchen Floors

Choosing flooring is a lot like choosing countertops. Which type you choose depends on the style of your kitchen, the amount of use it will get, and the price. Each type has its advantages and disadvantages.

Vinyl, linoleum and carpet are the most comfortable underfoot. Laminate, vinyl and polyurethane-treated wood are the most durable. Stone and concrete look good and are also hard-wearing, but are also harder to clean.

Decide whether you want to install flooring under your removable appliances or around them (whichever you choose, make sure you can roll them out for repairs). Talk to your designer about this.

Vinyl

The most common kitchen flooring material, vinyl offers the best value and versatility. It is available in many patterns and colors, either inlaid, where the pattern and color runs through the material (most durable, works well in high traffic areas), or a with a surface-only printed design which is not as lasting. Make sure you buy the appropriate grade for the area it will be used in. It is easy to clean and is stain- and water-resistant. It comes in either sheet or tile form.

Advantages:

Nice ‘bouncy’ feel underfoot (dependent on thickness). [...]
