The horrifying death of a child trapped in an abandoned refrigerator was the motivation behind a story by the Channel 5 news in Rio Grande Valley, Texas.

The station reported finding numerous refrigerators abandoned in people’s yards. This is certainly a danger and without question should be addressed as a public safety hazard, but the investigation states that “it’s against federal law to have such an appliance just sitting around.”

I was curious about this federal law called The Refrigerator Safety Act and looked into it myself. What I found is this:

{SEC. 1.} [15 U.S.C. 1211] It shall be unlawful for any person to introduce or deliver for introduction into interstate commerce any household refrigerator manufactured on or after the date this section takes effect unless it is equipped with a device, enabling the door there of to be opened from the inside, which conforms with standards prescribed pursuant to section 3.

The law was to become effective after the various standards were defined, all of which followed the Refrigerator Safety Act’s publication date of August 2, 1956. This also appears to be misunderstood in the news story.

The local station also reported that “The law says [...]
(click here to continue reading ››)

I’ve done it, albeit in an experimental way in a previous personal kitchen. In my case, it was an opportunity to try out some design ideas and at the same time hold us over until we were ready for the big remodel down the road. Here is a reader’s question on the topic of reusing kitchen cabinetry:

“I read the article on reusing cabinets and there are some great tips there. You mention the fact that reusing cabinets in a new configuration can be difficult but didn’t elaborate further. That is exactly what I am trying to do but need some expert advice!

I am in desperate need of a new layout in our kitchen, but our cabinets are in great shape. I have played around with the design and think I have something that will work. I am not a “handy” person so I was hoping to get some pointers on what to look at to determine if the existing cabinets could still be recycled in the new layout.

Do you have any advice on what I [...]
(click here to continue reading ››)

The Wine Varietal wine coolers are the first wine refrigerators to feature decorative glass doors. The clever coolers will be displaying various varietal names on the glass doors. The varietal writing, like the refrigerators, is black and its clean design is juxtaposed by varying fonts creating a subtle, yet fun, design element to otherwise plain glass doors.

In addition to good looks, Vinotemp Wine Varietal wine coolers also feature a touch screen control panel accompanied by a Varietal indicator – an uncomplicated way of notifying consumers of the appropriate temperature for the wine being stored. The indicator shows 3 different glasses of wine – a large red wine glass, a smaller white wine glass and a champagne flute.

I meant to formally introduce/announce this fantastic project before now, but at this moment, I want to enlist your help in making a decision on the interior of an inspiring house that I am working on. First, a bit about the project…

Leslie Hoffman, Executive Director of Earth Pledge is taking innovative green building and reuse philosophies to a new level with her current project, and personal residence, a modern beach house on bucolic Shelter Island, nestled between the twin forks of eastern Long Island. The project, named GimmeShelter, brings together a team of passionate green building professionals, led by Leslie’s decades long commitment to sustainable living. The products used in this home represent the latest green technology, information on which Leslie is particularly eager to share in an effort to inform and educate. The GimmeShelter project introduces a new dimension of community to a single residential home, supporting new thinking in indoor/outdoor living. I will talk much more about this project in the coming weeks and months. I’m thrilled and honored to be a part of this project. This 90cm wide fridge freezer is available in two models and features dual cooling system with different designs. The fridge compartment utilizes a passive cooling technology with cold air pumped from behind the rear aluminum condensation plate, ensuring high humidity and preventing food dehydration, uneven cooling and other unwanted cooling issues. The freezer compartment of this Frigidaire refrigerator employs an active cooling technology with multi flow, cold air blasting for a very cold, dry environment to quickly freeze and safely preserve food products for extended period of time.
