I had the privilege of being among an impressive group of design professionals serving as one of the judges for the Electrolux kitchen design competition, “The Kitchen Reimagined.” We met in New York City in November at the offices of Interior Design magazine.

Coming from different design disciplines, with me being the only kitchen design specialist, we dissected each submission from the global group of competition finalists.

Passionate dialogue, active listening in appreciation of all views of the design professionals in attendance and some open second guessing in search of verifying our instincts brought us closer to a smaller group of finalists. Time spent seeking to understand the points of view of all entrants eventually put the focus on the top 5 winners in the order we deemed appropriate.

The entries to The Kitchen Reimagined competition were, in a word, inspirational – and that is the spirit with which we approached our work. Spirit, imagination and inspiration were celebrated attributes in seeking the best kitchen design submissions. Interior Design Editor in Chief, Cindy Allen, was our fearless leader for the day.
[...]
(click here to continue reading ››)

And, I guess I actually do, at least in terms of regular blog writing. And, I always regret that, while at the same time I am planning post after post as events transpire, only to get involved with something else before I put fingers to the keyboard. Thus, the regret!

Right now, and for some time, I have been juggling some very exciting balls, all in the air (ok, the blog ball dropped!) I am currently working on:
designing kitchens for clients running the business and all that entails participating in short design consultations for clients keeping my hand in Twitter, my personal facebook profile and my professional Facebook page (“like” me!) working closely with Angela Min, who has been part of my business since the spring (she’s awesome, classically trained in Interior Design with a masters degree in ID, and you will be hearing from Angela on this blog and elsewhere!) working on my new product line, Bornholm, to be launched this summer and all THAT entails (a lot!) attending industry events blogging for [...]
(click here to continue reading ››)

DCS by Fisher & Paykel has once again scaled new heights of design and innovation with the announcement of its new DishDrawer Tall. Think of it as where DCS design meets Fisher & Paykel innovation. The company has reinvented its revolutionary DishDrawer, the world first dishwasher in a drawer, with the introduction of the DCS DishDrawer Tall featuring a more spacious design and new sleek modern styling that loses none of brand compact charm. Continuing to innovate and improve on its uniquely designed industry leading appliances has never been a tall order for Fisher & Paykel Appliances.

DishDrawer dishwasher is a signature product line for the company with its distinctive ergonomic design that doesn’t take up a lot space and cost-saving and environmental features that minimizes water, energy and detergent usage.

Someone sent me an email and asked if I thought there was a design flaw in a section of her cabinet design. I had to write back that, yes, I agreed with her that part of the design was flawed. Unfortunately, it was a finished picture of the kitchen that they had sent me, which made it even more uncomfortable for me to give my opinion. The kitchen was installed, and it looked like it cost a pretty penny. Here are words of wisdom:

“Lesson Learned

I learned a big lesson the hard way and wish I had gone with my instinct to hire a kitchen designer during my kitchen design process.

My contractor convinced me that it would make more sense for him to design the kitchen layout because he was also working on the electrical, plumbing etc. so there would be a cost savings to me if he designed it and worked with his preferred cabinet company.

We decided to go ahead and in the end I thought the kitchen looked great until I noticed some design elements that look flawed to me.

I believe that a [...]
(click here to continue reading ››)
